The first few shots that come up in a search are in a format where a complete sentence is reduced to a gray smudge. The real constraint for screenshot copy is that it will be read in a thumbnail view while a user is comparing several apps simultaneously.
Five to seven words per caption, each with a different point, in a sequence that forms a narrative if you swipe and/or works in the event that you decide not to.
What Makes No-AI Screenshot Copy Easy to Understand?
Legibility is key, and is usually a word-count problem. Six words are legible at quarter scale. Twelve words become texture. Dear editors, please, for the love of everything, put thought into each caption instead of wasting precious space. Much of the most common caption fails to describe a poor example: We’ve all taken a screenshot of our calendar at one time or another, and the caption couldn’t possibly add value beyond the word Calendar.
Where AI falls down on screenshot copy
Here are the screenshot captions. Your ‘View your dashboard’ text is placed over an image of a dashboard. You give a searching user information that the image already provides. The model can’t see what you see, so it narrates the name of the feature.
Product Context and Writing for No-AI Screenshot Copy
Because text must match the screens it supports, we start our outline with your screen designs. We see where the gaps are in the communication and the place for writing will become clear. When two screens communicate the same thing, we recommend removing one of them, rather than writing work-arounds.
Keeping No-AI Screenshot Copy Consistent Across Your App
Captions are meant to set expectations of what the customer can reasonably expect to happen within a minute of installation. We use the same captions as your in-app labels, so saying Smart Sort will not result in a menu item for Auto Arrange. If they differ, you will see a list of both captions and which one we suggest changing to.
What screenshot copy cost
One rate, whatever the format: $10 per 100 words. You are paying for the writer’s time and judgement, so the price scales with the words rather than with a package tier.

No, we write the copy. Most teams send either frames or a rough layout, and we write to the available space. Unless specifically told otherwise by the designer, we won’t return copy that ends up needing to be shrunk. For example, if the designer indicates that the caption box fits two lines of copy around twenty characters, we write to that rather than return copy that needs to be shrunk.
German and Finnish translations require approximately a third more space than English translations. We flag captions containing text with limited space and provide a shortened English version that survives expansion so that localized sets do not project a different meaning compared to the original.

Release notes that people want to read
Our releases happen every fortnight, and our notes have evolved into change logs. To keep things organized, the writer has noted what changed within a card or view and what changed underneath. Each note is a brief summary of the change. The biggest metric I’m interested in post release is the volume of support tickets. It always dips.

Engineers read them now
Our release notes went unread, but they serve the purpose of listing what breaks and what doesn’t when considering whether to upgrade. Two customers actually took the time to send thank yous in the same week, something that had never happened before.

One endpoint took two tries
Mostly excellent. Your improvements to the auth section are better than what our engineers wrote. Your pagination endpoints, however, were explained in the spec according to how they behave rather than how they are, which required two revisions. Our spec is incorrect in that area as well.
