In a novella, there is only space for one of the following: a broken relationship, a choice that can’t be unset, a week that can redefine your life. The form brutally polices everything else. Fiction voice is not description. It is the narrator’s specificity. It’s not just what they choose to include. It’s what they choose not to include. It’s the irony in their dialogue. If the narrator’s attention is consistent, a reader will trust them. Inconsistent attention, however, will turn a story into a report of the events in the text.

We agree that the ending comes before the beginning, as every scene in a novella is a debt owed at the end. The writer then plots in reverse, casts four or five characters, and creates a first person opening duologue to show the difference between close third and first person.
The first draft is written as quickly as possible and never shared with anyone. The writer then abstains from working on the draft for several days and re-reads everything as if it were the first time. At this point, he/she is able to identify scenes and/or dialogues that are duplicating one another, and he/she is able to make the cuts. The last step in the process is to line edit. Polishing individual sentences is wasteful.
