Thoughtful Setup Instructions, Written by Humans

Setup instructions are read once by a person holding a box or looking at an empty account. They either work or they become that customer’s first support ticket. There is no second chance to make the first ten minutes effective.

Almost every failure comes down to two mistakes: something the reader needed before step one was not indicated, and a single numbered step contained three actions. Both are easy to see by doing the setup and impossible to see by describing it.

Why Choose No-AI Setup Instructions?

Prerequisites are something you don’t know you need until you need them. The person that made the product is able to skip all of the steps. That means no pages are ever loaded. A new user attempting to complete the product step by step is doing it exactly how it was meant. This is because the new user doesn’t know what exists for the product yet. Knowing what your product is can give you perspective on what you need to do the product.

  • A stated list of what the reader needs before they start.
  • One action per numbered step, no exceptions.
  • Checkpoints so the reader can tell they are on track.

Where AI falls down on setup instructions

A model writes instructions for a user who has already been set up. It jumps the prerequisite that it had no way to know about, folds opening the app and signing in into one step, and gives the user no way to determine if step four worked before they reach step five.

How We Write No-AI Setup Instructions

The writer does the setup from a clean device or a fresh account, taking notes on everything that was not obvious. Wherever they get stuck, a step gets added. The draft then goes to a second person who follows it literally, and every place that reader hesitates is marked and rewritten.

How a setup instruction gets written here

  1. Conduct the setup on a new device or new account, taking note of all friction points.
  2. List prerequisites separately, covering accounts, permissions, cables and versions.
  3. Break the draft down into numbered steps, and make each step a single action.
  4. Have a second reader follow the draft literally, marking every place they hesitate.

What You Get With No-AI Setup Instructions

You receive the instructions along with the two things setup pages ordinarily do not provide: a prerequisites block at the start, and a quick check at the end so readers can confirm success instead of guessing at it. Instead of cramming variants into brackets, the instructions state each platform and model difference explicitly.

  • A prerequisites block covering accounts, permissions, hardware, and versions.
  • Single-action steps carrying exactly the on-screen labels.
  • Checkpoints with the expected screen state described.
  • Platform and model variants written out rather than bracketed.
  • A short section on the three things that go wrong most often.

What people commission setup instructions for

  • Printing a quick-start card to accompany the product.
  • Reducing initial support requests following a hardware rollout.
  • Creating a guide to support users installing a self-serve trial.
  • Revising instructions that have been poorly translated from one language to another.

What setup instructions cost

One rate, whatever the format: $10 per 100 words. You are paying for the writer’s time and judgement, so the price scales with the words rather than with a package tier.

Buying No-AI Setup Instructions: FAQs

Anything from 100 words up. Because you pay by the word you are never buying padding to fill a package tier.

Yes. Tell us the volume and cadence and we keep the same writer on the account so the voice stays consistent. The rate does not change with volume.

If you send us a unit or a loan device, the writer will configure the device. Where that is not possible, we will use a setup screen recording, and delivery will state which steps were verified and which steps were made by the writer.

Yes, the two are more different than most people anticipate. Since print cannot link, cross-references become page numbers and a fold-out card carries a hard word budget. Indicate the physical format and trim size and the writer will work to it.

What clients say about our setup instructions

Consistent, apart from the screenshots

Thirty articles with the same structure and with the same voice are difficult to develop for a knowledge base. Screenshot placeholders were described with prose instead of with tags. Unfortunately, our designer had to try to find them with some difficulty. This is a small thing, but I plan to put it in the brief next time.

Ticket deflection actually moved

Twenty-two articles on our top ticket drivers. The writer requested redacted transcripts, and then described the problems in the way customers used the language – thermostat will not hold temperature, instead of thermostat calibration. Help center search finally started working.

Ticket deflection actually moved

Eleven articles covering our top ticket drivers. They requested the original ticket text first, not the internal descriptions, and the difference is significant. The articles use the terms customers input into the search box. There’s been a downward shift of about a fifth in the volume of contacts on those topics.
