A supporting article does what the pillar had to skip. It elaborates on one subtopic beyond what a section would allow, which means the writer needs to know exactly where the pillar had to stop.
If you miscalculate that boundary, you have just produced a briefer version of a page that you already have.
Supporting pieces enable growth through their specificity. Each supporting piece tackles one precise question that a pillar is too broad to answer, and each one passes relevance back up through its link. A cluster of six specific pages is likely to attract more total visits than a single page that tries to cover the same ground at half the depth.
