Six weeks following the note taking process, people lose the ability to determine which sentences were direct quotations and which were paraphrased. This is an example of accidental plagiarism. These honest people likely do not even realize they are plagiarizing until they sit down to write their first formal essay.
Our notes instruct us to place quotation marks around all quotes with the corresponding page number, to distinguish paraphrased sections bracketed and the reader’s own comments. The distinction holds even when the file is undisturbed on a drive for a long period of time.
Good notes are designed to be distilled and trackable. They are distilled in such a way to encourage a reading of the material. Distilled notes are more trackable by nature of a referenceable list of page numbers, rather than a bunch of other notes and chapter outlines. Arguably the most important, good notes are designed to be read at 2AM.
When a paper can’t be opened, a model describes what it infers from the abstract. Page numbers that don’t match anything appear. A qualification in the methods section is overlooked, since that section was never read.
The note-taker reads the source and fills the template with citations at the top, argument in two sentences and evidence with page number. They do not guess information and if they are uncertain, they leave the source citation and include a line indicating that they checked the source.
Notes are raw source material and everything written from them still has to be yours. Quote directly from the source to avoid using our notes, and go back to the original source before including lengthy quotations. Someone else typing a page number deserves one check from you.
