Hero line took two attempts
Body copy was spot on, but hero headline was off. It explained who we are, rather than what we do for the customer. Perfect in the second attempt. Two rounds are included, so it was free, just a day’s wait.
Someone had a target in mind when they reached a 404 page. This could have happened for a variety of reasons, including a misclick, a mistyped URL, or a broken bookmark. They need to get to where the link should send them. That is the job of this page. Essays
Providing the homepage isn’t the solution. It gives the visitor the navigation problem at the moment of least patience.
Because there are no links to anything else on a 404 page, context is everything. Helping someone from your old blog post navigate is very different from helping someone who typed in a URL for a product incorrectly. Offering a search box and two to three links that are the most relevant helps a lot of people. In fact, it improves more sessions than you would expect.
Every 404 page uses the same joke. The page is Lost in Space, visualized with a broken robot image. It is the most templated copy on the internet. After the joke, there is a link home and nothing that indicates the visitor actually wants something specific.
Your 404s are traced to their sources. The majority of them come from retired blog URLs. The page suggests you visit the blog index and search box. 404s from discontinued catalogs suggest equivalents. The writing aligns with evidence rather than a template.
Someone should click every link on staging since an unfinished staging link is an unnecessary joke on yourself. It takes around two minutes with the provided links and the wording.
One rate, whatever the format: $10 per 100 words. You are paying for the writer’s time and judgement, so the price scales with the words rather than with a package tier.
| Typical 404 copy | Words | Writing | Fee (1%) | You pay |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 404 page copy | 100 | $10 | $0.10 | $10.10 |
| 404 with recovery paths and search | 200 | $20 | $0.20 | $20.20 |
| 404 variants by site section | 400 | $40 | $0.40 | $40.40 |

Usually. Compared to other systems, full navigation gives people a chance to opt out, and leaves the page feeling more in line with your site. Strip it only if other navigation on the page was what smacked them in the face so far as they meet with your messages.
The page doesn’t direct to anywhere, but the links point to it. If a URL has been retired, but still has links pointing to it, a good 404 page is nothing in comparison to a redirect. We will show which pages the links are missing to, and you can take care of implementing the redirects.

I gave them 400 support emails and said to grab 20 pertinent questions. I got 18 questions in return and an explanation as to why the other two were the same question. That explanation turned out to be really helpful in resolving tickets.
Most case studies rush their client’s problem to get to the hero part. This one takes the trouble to describe, in great detail, the client’s loss of pallets in the warehouse. It does a good job in describing what we were up against, and by the time you read about what we did you actually give a damn. This inversion was the writer’s idea, not mine.
